FOCUS : PAST MODALS - ODD?

SO WHAT, ARE WE DEALING WITH?

Past modals tell US

what could have, would have, and should have happened.

To form these past modals, use could, would, or should followed by have, followed by a past participle verb. [ “Past participle” is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as “the form of a verb, typically ending in -ed in English, which is used in forming perfect and passive tenses.” This means that verbs in the past participle form usually end in the letters “ed.” For example, the word “talked.”]

Use have for all pronouns; never use has or had to form a past [LEARN ENGLISH.COM]
